Propane for tailgating

Nothing kills the party like a cold grill at halftime. Here is how long your portable tank lasts, how much gas to pack, and how to plan it so the burgers never stop.

Tailgate tanks: the two common choices

Tailgate grills run on one of two fuel sources, and they behave very differently. A 1 lb green cylinder is light and grab-and-go but holds only about 21,594 BTU — one pound of propane. A 20 lb tank (with an adapter hose) holds about 432,000 BTU, twenty times more, but it is bulkier to haul. Knowing the burn rate of your portable grill tells you which to bring.

1 lb cylinder

~21,594 BTU. About 1–2 hours on a small portable grill. Pack a spare or two.

20 lb tank + hose

~432,000 BTU. Enough for a dozen tailgates — overkill you will never run out of.

Plan the burn

Match your tank to a 2–3 hour cook so you are never scrambling at kickoff.

How long a 1 lb cylinder really lasts

Portable tailgate grills are usually rated 8,000–20,000 BTU/hr. Run the numbers on a single 1 lb cylinder:

Portable grill outputFull-output run time on 1 lb
8,000 BTU/hr~2.7 hr
12,000 BTU/hr~1.8 hr
16,000 BTU/hr~1.3 hr
20,000 BTU/hr~1.1 hr

So a single cylinder on a punchy 20,000 BTU/hr grill barely covers a quarter of game-day cooking at full blast. For a typical two-to-three-hour tailgate, plan on two or three cylinders — or step up to a 20 lb tank.

How much to pack for game day

  1. Estimate your cook time. Most tailgates involve two to three hours of actual grilling, not the whole pre-game.
  2. Find your grill's BTU/hr. Check the label or manual and add up the burners.
  3. Run the calculator. Set your tank size and a cookout length that matches your tailgate to see if one tank covers it.
  4. Add a backup. Always bring one more cylinder (or keep the 20 lb tank above a third) than the math says. Wind and an open lid burn faster than the rating.

Tailgating in the cold? Tank pressure drops in freezing weather, so a portable grill may not hit its full output — bring extra fuel for late-season and playoff games.

Common questions

How long does a 1 lb propane cylinder last?

About 1.8 hours on a 12,000 BTU/hr portable grill and roughly 1 hour on a 20,000 BTU/hr grill, at full output. For a full tailgate, pack two or three.

How much propane do I need for a tailgate?

Plan for two to three hours of grilling — around 40,000–60,000 BTU on a 20,000 BTU/hr grill. That is a couple of 1 lb cylinders or a small dent in a 20 lb tank, plus one spare for safety.

Can I run a 20 lb tank on a portable grill?

Yes, with an adapter hose rated for your grill. A 20 lb tank holds about 432,000 BTU — far more than a tailgate needs — so you will not run out; you just carry more weight. Always use a proper hose and regulator.
